The Batman 2 is definitely happening with Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson | British GQ
When is The Batman 2 going to come out?
Director Matt Reeves announced the news that he'll direct and write the sequel during Warner Bros.' presentation at CinemaCon — an annual trade event for cinema proprietors and nerds — in April. He kept expectedly quiet on any specific plot details around the next adventure for the Caped Crusader, stopping very much short of confirming that, yes, Mr. Freeze will step in as Gotham's new leading menace.
Now, Mattson Tomlin — best known for writing and/or directing a slew of sci-fi dystopi-flicks, including the Chloë Grace Moretz starring Mother/Android — has joined the scriptwriting team, following his work on the original.
Here's everything else we know about The Batman 2.
What's the plot for The Batman 2?
Good question, but unfortunately it'd take more than the world's greatest detective to crack this nut right now. For starters, The Hollywood Reporter tells us that “the writing process hasn't begun just yet but is expected to in the coming weeks” — and once it is finished, one has got to think that it'll end up under fiercely guarded lock and key in the Batcave.
Delving into the prospect of an R-Batz return to Gotham, it seems both Pattinson and Reeves are brimming with ideas for the next one. First: Pattinson wants a 13-year-old to come in and play a version of Robin, and worse for the poor kid, for him to be beaten to death by the Joker a la the comics. (He thinks that'd be “so cool,” by the way. Nice.)
Reeves noted before that he's “drawn to finding the grounded version of everything,” so don't expect a sudden tonal 180 into Clooney-esque campiness.
That said, The Hollywood Reporter notes that “It is not even clear whether the sequel will feature the Joker, Batman's classic nemesis teased in the closing moments of Reeves' movie and portrayed by Barry Keoghan,” who could well be being kept in stasis for a threequel. Whatever the case, let's not rush him out of Arkham.
When will The Batman 2 come out?
Here's another point that hardly requires a super sleuth to work out: we have no idea for sure, but it's gonna be ages. For starters, if they've not even got to work on the script, bank three to six months at least to get it to a workable state on the page, giving us a potential early production start in mid-2023.
According to Robert Pattinson's interview with GQ, the first Batman took eighteen months to shoot, albeit delayed by the pandemic. Either way, a conservative guesstimate might give you another three to six months of shooting, plus post-production… by which point, well, you're already well into 2024, if not 2025. And that's assuming the stars align and everyone is available at the same time.
Pattinson, for his part, has at least one other upcoming project on the books: his leading role in Bong Joon-ho's adaptation of sci-fi book Mickey7.
There's one little bit of good news: The Batman producer Dylan Clark reckons it could land within the next half decade and, in fact, he seems pretty damn sure of that. “I will go on record and say that it will be less than five years,” he told ComicBook.com at a red carpet event back in March.
Until then, we guess we'll just have to do with Batfleck and Michael Keaton's oldie Bruce (well, probably).
